About the festival
An illustrated recipe book where every cake comes with a guest, a story, and a scene.
Every year the festival opens, and every year someone asks me what it is. It is a book. It is also a festival. The guests arrive with cakes. They sit down and they tell you about the cake. Sometimes they tell you more than you asked for. That is the point.
What it is
The Great CAKE Festival is a recipe book that lives on the web. Each cake gets its own page: a scene, a guest who brought it, a story, and a recipe.
Every guest brought a cake, and every cake comes with a story. You can bake what they baked. Several are very good. A few are unusual. One of them is not technically a recipe at all, but you should read it anyway.
How each cake page works
- A scene. Every cake opens in a corner of the festival grounds, drawn to be looked at for a while. Something small is hiding in each one.
- A guest with a story. Every cake belongs to someone. They have a name, an opinion, and something to say about it.
- A real recipe. Written in plain language, with just what you need to bake the cake.
Free and members
Everyone can walk the whole festival, read every story, and search every cake. Five cakes are free with their recipes. As more guests arrive, some recipes will be held for members, who pay a small monthly or yearly fee to unlock them. Here is how that will work.

The festival was Beatrice's idea, but she has asked not to be credited because she finds that sort of thing unnecessary. She has opinions about cream, about refrigeration, and about what people mean when they say a cake is easy. She is usually right.
